Ecotourism Development and Sustainability in Nigeria

Prospects and Challenges – Nigeria is endowed with several resources of international ecological and touristic resources and importance which should serve as the bases for sustainable tourism development. With the largest population in Africa that can sustain domestic tourism, and many cultures which reflect in food and environment, Nigeria is at advantage to attract both local and international tourists and therefore derive significant benefits for national development. The ecotourism resources of Nigeria are well packaged and if well promoted, places Nigeria at a well advantaged position. The tourism attractions in Nigeria when developed – properly packaged and promoted can satisfy the curiosity of almost every kind of tourists; and this will bring about increased benefits such as massive employment, increased revenue generation, local empowerment, foreign exchange earnings, creation of market for local products and development of infrastructures.

Some Ecotourism Destinations in Nigeria

Badagry Beaches – Badagry has a lot of interesting places to visit. Like Whispering Palms Beaches,Badgry Heritage Museum, and the Slave Port. It is located in Badagry, Lagos, South Westhern Nigeria.

Lekki Conservative Center

Lekki Conservation Center – This is a beautiful and wonderful ecotourism site to visit, with lots of side attractions such as Zoos, and animals in its natural habitate, and the highest canopy walk in Africa. It is located in Lekki, Lagos, Nigeria.

Ikogosi Warm Spring – This is a unique place to visit because there is a special meeting point of two streams, one stream is very cold, and the other is very hot. When they meet,they merge, mix to form a warm spring. A lot of tourists go over there to swim, relax, and enjoy the beautiful natural environment. It is located in Ikogosi, Ekiti State, South Westhern Nigeria.

Olumo Rock – This place is a favorite haven for many ecotourists, because of its rich history. For it is believed to have provided a safe haven for the early natives and inhabitants of Abeokuta. It is located in Abeokuta, Ogun State, South Westhern Nigeria.
